POSITION TITLE: Licensed Social Worker

DEPARTMENT: Police Department

REPORTS TO (TITLE): Deputy Chief(s) of Police or their designee

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

Engages in crisis intervention and refers those experiencing mental health issues, substance use disorder, homelessness, and traumatic events to appropriate resource and/or agency. Trains Department personnel and community members on topics and available resources related to the previous aforementioned issues.

The following are essential duties for this position, performed with or without reasonable accommodation:

·         Works with Community Engagement Officers and social service agencies to coordinate solutions for individuals with mental health or substance use issues, those experiencing homelessness, and trauma victims.

·         Works with members of Uniform and Criminal Investigations Division to build case work and deploy necessary follow up services to those identified in need.

·         Accompanies officers to death scenes that could be the result of criminal or non-criminal circumstances and/or to provide death notifications to families or other survivors.

·         Provides individual counseling, debriefing sessions, and/or other available resources to Department personnel who are exposed to traumatic events or who otherwise find themselves in need of services.

·         Inputs information into the Department's CAD/RMS system as well as the software program designated for use by the Department Social Workers to document interactions with clients.

·         Identifies trends in the problems individuals face that impact the community and presents recommendations on how to solve those problems and/or alleviate the impact.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

·         Supervises an intern

·         Participates in Community Engagement Division functions

·         Performs related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his or her designee.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

·         College Degree in Social Work or related field, required.

·         Knowledge of community agencies and how to access the services that they provide. Excellent communication skills.

·         Ability to work varying hours and to be on call.

·         Ability to maintain confidentiality when necessary and appropriate.

·         Ability to work in stressful or emotionally-charged situations where individuals may be experiencing crisis or exhibiting erratic behavior.

·         Experience in providing crisis intervention techniques and services is preferred.

·         Knowledge of standard office procedures and ability to operate modem office equipment. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

·         Have a valid IN state Driver's License

·         Pass Criminal Background Check administered by the Muncie Police Department

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY AND SUPERVISION:

 

Reports directly to the Senior Social Worker or Community Engagement Police Supervisor. Required to make non-routine decisions based on sound judgment for circumstances either observed or presented by an individual. Work may be self-initiated, assigned by others, performed independently, or be done in cooperation with other Department personnel, specifically the Community Engagement Division and Investigations and Uniform Divisions. All work with individuals/clients shall be done in accordance with the core values and ethical code of the social work profession. Daily activities may be reviewed by the Senior Social Worker, Community Engagement supervisor or Chief of Police or their designee, through reports at designated intervals.

May be required to supervise and evaluate the performance of a student intern who is pursuing education in Social Work or a similar field. As determined by the Chief or his/her designee, other "job shadow" opportunities may arise as a way for the community and/or students to better understand the issues being addressed and the job function.
