Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
Incumbent serves as heavy equipment operator for the City Street Department and is responsible for operating City vehicles and equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Operates various heavy equipment and trucks including payloader, roadgrader, backhoe, tractor, related attachments in effecting the general maintenance, repair, and safety of City roads and right-of-ways.
2. Patches, chips, and seals roads, digs ditches, scrapes, grades and maintains road beams and shoulders, as needed.
3. Loads, dumps, and shovels crushed stone, sand, and salt from trucks, and removes snow from City streets using appropriate equipment.
4. Regularly checks trucks and equipment to ensure proper fluid levels and mechanical functions.
5. Removes debris such as leaves and sand from streets, sidewalks, drains, and alleys, using appropriate equipment.
6. Trims and clears trees/brush from City streets and right-of-ways using chain saws and chippers.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Operates mower, and street sweeper, to clean and maintain City streets and right-of-ways as assigned.
2. On 24 hour call in case of emergencies.

Incumbent performs majority of duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to excessive noise, dirt, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Working knowledge of and ability to operate trucks and related equipment. (M,P)
2. Basic knowledge of the mechanics of light and heavy equipment and ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repair. (M,P)
3. Working knowledge of safety procedures for working in or around heavy equipment, and/or working around traffic. (M,P)
4. Ability to legally operate assigned department vehicles. (M,P)
5. Ability to follow verbal instructions. (M,P)
6. Must possess a commercial driver's license. (M,P)
7. Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. (P)
8. Ability to use chain saws and/or chipper. (M,P)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Incumbent is responsible for the diagnosis and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment and works independently, making decisions and taking necessary actions to effect necessary repairs. Care and skill is required to protect equipment, vehicles, and tools. Generally, work is performed according to general instructions, from the Chief of the Motor Pool, and incumbent is frequently forced to deviate from standard practices and to effectively innovate to achieve desired results, especially in regard to equipment for which neither parts nor repair manual can be obtained.
